History of the beer style
Belgian golden ales began to gain popularity in the 1960’s. Originally, most Belgian ales were dark in color. When light colored beers, such as pilsners, entered the market, Belgian ale makers adapted and began making lighter colored beers. Like most Belgian beers, golden ales are strong (7-10% alcohol by volume). This brew utilizes special yeasts with unique flavors. Our Belgian Golden Ale is made with one of these distinctive yeast strains and is brewed in the traditional manner.
Abita's Select Belgian Golden Ale
Our Belgian Golden Ale is made exclusively with pale malts, resulting in a deep golden color and sweet malty taste. It is a strong brew (7.5% abv), but is hopped liberally with German hops to balance out the sweetness and strength. We selected a special Belgian yeast strain that slightly imparts the flavors of banana, clove and even bubble gum. The result is a unique, strong and flavorful ale.
Food Pairings
Belgian Golden Ales are excellent accompaniments to food, especially at the beginning and end of meals. These ales are often served with hors d’oeuvres, especially salty ones, and also go beautifully with salads. The fruitiness of the beer frames the flavor of these dishes. These beers also make an excellent aperitif. Most Belgians consider these beers to be superior to champagne as a before dinner drink. Belgian Golden Ale also stands up well to most oily fish, such as salmon.
