Abita Beer Hosts Louisiana's First Homebrewers Rally

Louisiana home brewing legislation on the agenda

Abita Springs, LA – The Abita Brewing Company, in conjunction with the American Homebrewers Association, is pleased to announce the first ever homebrewing rally held in Louisiana.  The rally & crawfish boil will be held at the brewery in Abita Springs on Saturday, March 27 from 1 to 5 PM.  The event is free and open to all members of the American Homebrewers Association.  Anyone who is not an AHA member can purchase a membership at the rally at a discounted rate.

Homebrewing enthusiasts from around the Gulf-Coast region will gather for a VIP tour of the Abita Brewery, visit with the Abita brewmasters and hear from Gary Glass, Director of the American Homebrewers Association based in Boulder, Colorado.
Legalizing Homebrewing in Louisiana

Gary Glass is travelling to the area to promote the art of homebrewing and to support proposed legislation that would legalize homemade beer in Louisiana. “Currently homebrewing in Louisiana is allowed under a Louisiana Supreme Court ruling dating back to 1944.  Our only protection has been a 66 year old case that overturned a conviction dealing with four bottles of homebrew – but there’s no real law on the books to protect homebrewers,” said Glass.

“House Bill 503 would establish the ‘Louisiana Homemade Beer Law’, which would forever protect the right of every Louisiana citizen to make beer for his or her own personal use, tax-free and without any permit or license,” said Glass.  “This bill makes homebrewing explicitly legal.  We feel that this legislation is vital to create an environment where the hobby can grow in Louisiana,” concluded Glass.

Abita’s Homebrewing History

David Blossman, President of Abita Beer, has no problem with his beer company promoting do-it-yourself beer.  “Just about everybody who really loves beer has tried their hand at making their own,” said Blossman.  “I won some prizes for my homebrews years ago and many Abita employees have homebrewing experience too.  Brewing is a creative, almost artistic process.  It’s like creating a gourmet meal, something we’re really good at in Louisiana,” continued Blossman.  “Abita is happy to promote the creation and enjoyment of great beer.”

The Abita Brewing Company
