FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 11, 2011
(New Orleans, LA) –The Abita Brewing Company is pleased to announce the launch of the new “Abita App” for iPhone®, iPod touch® and iPad™ users worldwide. Abita is the first craft brewery to launch an app that gives their customers the power to help each other find the craft beer they love.
The free application allows consumers to instantly locate where Abita products are sold with a powerful nation-wide search engine. Users can find nearby retail stores, restaurants and bars that sell Abita and which particular brews they offer. Abita App users can also learn more about the over thirty full flavored ales and lagers brewed by Abita. The app features suggestions for perfect pairings of beer and food to enhance any meal. Like wine, beer can be used to complement food and bring out the flavors and complexities of both the meal and the brew.
Finding Abita Across The USA
“Another feature of the Abita App allows our customers to participate in building the database of locations selling Abita Beer,” said Abita Brewing Company President David Blossman. “When they find a new bar, restaurant or store that sells Abita they can send us a report via the Abita App and we’ll update the beer locator, ” continued Blossman. “Now that Abita Beer is sold in over 46 states people are finding it everywhere and we wanted a way for our customers to share their discoveries with the community,” concluded Blossman.

New Orleans- Christmas is coming early this week for some Louisiana fishermen. More than 250 fishermen will receive a check from the Friends of the Fishermen Fund.
The fund was created in July and has raised more than $127,000 for Louisiana Fishermen. For the initial distribution, 257 fishermen will each receive $500 . Corporate and Individual donors were a part of this outpouring of support for Louisiana fishermen following the Gulf Oil Spill. Friends of Louisiana fishermen include, Abita Beer; Rouses Markets and their customers; Hurricane Harley Davidson; Casa Argentina Social Club of New Orleans; Sammy Kershaw’s Protect Our Coastline, New Orleans restaurants; artist Michael Israel; South Florida Foodies, SUGARCANE raw bar grill; the Miami International Wine Fair; and individual donors.
The Friends of the Fishermen fund was started as a way to help the fishermen who were affected by the BP oil spill. The fund is endorsed by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board and administrated by the South Central Planning and Development Commission. The Seafood Board selected this commission to allocate funds to Louisiana fishermen based on the commission’s exemplary work managing similar responsibilities following Hurricane Katrina.
Mike Voisin, owner of Motivatit Seafood and 7th generation oysterman is chairman of the fund. “There are victims of the Gulf Oil Spill whose needs have not been met through other programs and we are happy that we were able to work with South Central Planning and Development Commission to identify those individuals and thankful to our donors who are brightening the spirits of some very deserving fishermen,” said Voisin.
Abita Brewing Company’s $50,000 donation comes from the SOS Charitable Fund, established by the brewing company to assist with restoration and recovery after the disastrous oil spill. Abita created a special beer, SOS (Save Our Shore) – A Charitable Pilsner, and donates 75 cents for every bottle sold to the fund. The SOS charitable fund has raised more than $255,000 for Gulf Oil Spill relief.
“We feel compelled as one of Louisiana’s favorite brands to assist our neighbors and the coastal environment as we continue to recover from this disaster,” stated David Blossman President of Abita Brewing Company. “Being able to help these families during the Christmas season is a gift we’re pleased and proud to give.”
Ali Rouse, of Rouses Markets said that their company, customers and team members raised more than $25,000 in four short weeks when they sold white boots made of paper at the registers of their stores in Louisiana and Mississippi.
“After Katrina and Rita, then again after Gustav and Ike, we saw how a community pulling together could make a difference for a person, a neighborhood, a community, a state, even a region,” said Rouse. “With the spill, we saw an opportunity to help our fishing communities, and our friends, team members, and partners immediately stepped up to join us. I feel good about the money we raised, but even better about the team work that went in to raising it.” In preparation for fund distribution, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries worked with South Central Development and Planning Commission to identify commercial fishing license holders. Applications and surveys were sent to 2515 fishermen and 1157 responded. From this data the group was able to identify fishermen who resided in affected parishes and eliminate those who had the opportunity to work for the BP vessels of opportunity program. “Our agency was the administrator for the “Back to the Dock” program which was funded by Shell Oil and gave funds to fishermen following Hurricane Katrina and assisting with distribution donations for the Friends of the Fishermen Fund was a natural fit for us. We are thankful for the donors who make this distribution of checks possible,” said Kevin Belanger, CEO for South Central Development and Planning Commission.
The Friends of the Fishermen Fund hopes to distribute additional funding as it becomes available through other means including their partnership with the 2011 Black and Gold Super Fan Calendar, which features some of the New Orleans Saints most colorful fans. The calendar can be purchased online at www.superfancalendar.com or locally at Rouses Markets. The New Orleans Hornets also recently launched their “Believe in Blue Campaign” which will benefit Friends of the Fishermen among other gulf coast charities.
ABITA BREWING COMPANY SUPPORTS DUCKS UNLIMITED’S LOUISIANA COASTAL CONSERVATION INITIATIVE
NEW ORLEANS, La. December 3, 2010 – Louisiana-based Abita Brewing Company recently donated $100,000 to Ducks Unlimited, leader in wetlands conservation, for restoration of important wetland habitats along Louisiana’s imperiled coast.
The donation comes from the SOS Charitable Fund, established by the brewing company to assist with restoration and recovery after the disastrous oil spill. Abita created a special beer, SOS (Save Our Shore) – A Charitable Pilsner, and donates 75 cents for every bottle sold to the fund. To date, more than $255,000 has been raised for the cause.
“This leadership gift will help restore more than 3,000 acres of critical wetland habitat,” Chad Manlove, DU director of development, said. “Abita’s gift will be pooled with other public and private entities to create a substantial conservation impact in coastal Louisiana.”
The Louisiana coastal marshes provide critical wintering grounds for millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds. Unfortunately, these marshes are disappearing at an alarming rate. Louisiana has already lost more than one million acres of these continentally significant wetlands and continues to lose 16,000-20,000 acres annually.
“We feel compelled as one of Louisiana’s favorite brands to assist our neighbors and the coastal environment as we continue to recover from this disaster,” stated, David Blossman, president of Abita Brewing Company. “We’re proud to be a part of the efforts to conserve and restore coastal Louisiana.”
The donation from Abita Brewing Company will be combined with a North American Wetland Conservation Act grant and financial support from other partners to restore hydrology to the Grand Bayou Unit on Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes.
“Particularly along the Gulf Coast, it is essential that corporations, individuals, public agencies and private organizations join together and combine resources to accomplish meaningful restoration,” Bob Dew, DU manager of conservation programs for Louisiana, said. “DU is fully committed to this philosophy, and we are very pleased to add Abita Brewing Company to our list of partners supporting a sustainable coast.”
Pointe-aux-Chenes has one of the highest public use rates among all of Louisiana’s wildlife management areas. Hurricane Rita damaged levees there, and in three short years without management capabilities, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries documented significant habitat deterioration and reduced wildlife use. The proposed project will allow managers to manage salinity and water levels and encourage production of submerged aquatic vegetation, an important food source for waterfowl.
The Abita Brewing Company was founded in Abita Springs, LA, in 1986 and is the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast. They brew more than 108,000 barrels of full flavored ales and lagers and 6,000 barrels of root beer in their state-of-the-art facility. Their lagers and ales are brewed in small batches, hand-crafted by a team of dedicated workers.
Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 12 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.
