INGREDIENTS

Our Beer and Ales are made with only the finest ingredients:
• Water
• Malted Barley
• Yeast
• Hops
There are only two other exceptions, our wheat beer and purple haze, in which we add wheat and raspberries.
Water is the main ingredient in beer. We are blessed with water that not only tastes great but also has the proper mineral content and PH level for making great beer. Abita Brewing Company draws its artesian water from a deep well straight into the mashtun. We do not alter the pristine water in any way. The great majority of breweries have to filter and chemically treat their water. A beer’s color and taste is determined largely by the amount and type of malt used.

Abita uses 3 types of pale malt, crystal and chocolate malt. Most of the large domestic and some import breweries use corn and rice. These ingredients are cheaper sources of starch than the barley we use in our beer. The result is a beer lighter in taste, body, and color. The type of yeast to ferment wort has a profound effect on the finished product's flavor and aroma. Yeast can accentuate different flavor characteristics or even add fruity, spicy, or bread like notes to a beer's taste. Abita uses only the finest lager and ale yeast strains developed by the German brewing school at Weihenstephan.
Hops contain waxy resigns that contribute bitterness to beer as well as oils that provide flavor and smell. Abita uses only the finest varieties of hops from Europe and Washington State.
